A 2.5-hour guided hike onto the ice of Sólheimajökull. Small groups, a certified guide, and no experience needed — just you and the glacier.
You're booking the guide, not a call centre. Small groups so the pace stays yours and the glacier stays the point.
AIMG-trained in glacier travel, crevasse rescue and ice safety. Full gear and a proper briefing are part of the deal.
Never worn crampons? Good. This route is graded easy and family-friendly, so a normal level of fitness is all you bring.
Sólheimajökull is an outlet tongue of the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, streaked with black volcanic ash and shot through with blue. It's one of the most accessible glaciers on the South Coast, and one of the most photogenic.
We meet at the base camp, fit your crampons and harness, and hand you an ice axe. After a short walk in, you step onto the ice itself — ridges, sinkholes, and meltwater channels, with the time and space to actually look at them.
The whole thing runs about 2.5 hours, with roughly an hour spent on the glacier. The pace is relaxed and there's plenty of room to stop for photos. Warm layers, a waterproof jacket and sturdy boots are what you want on your feet — rentals are on hand if you turn up without them.
I've spent years guiding on Iceland's glaciers and rigging anchors on ice that most people only see from a car park. Wild Mike Reid ehf. is my own operation — when you book, you get me, or a guide I'd trust with my own rope.
This tour is the easy way in: low commitment, high reward, and a real glacier under your feet. If you want to go further afterwards, we can talk about that on the ice.
